Rivers under Ice: Evaluating Simulated Morphodynamics through a Riffle-Pool Sequence

نویسندگان

چکیده

Modeling in ice-covered rivers is limited due to added computational complexity, specifically challenges with the collection of field calibration data. Using River2D, a 2-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling software, this study simulates depth-averaged velocity and shear stress distributions under ice cover open-water conditions during varying flow small, shallow riffle-pool sequence. The results demonstrated differences distribution throughout channel increases discharge were found impact magnitude cover, while spatial remained consistent. A recirculating eddy along pool’s left bank was exacerbated potential implications for silver shiner habitat suitability. Bed did not vary significantly between open water, although differed notably. Model validation success simulating water depth velocities, estimated within reasonable margin. models provides valuable insight into seasonal changes velocities when present.

Flow Structure through Pool-riffle Sequences and a Conceptual Model for Their Sustainability in Gravel-bed Rivers

Detailed field measurements and simulations of three-dimensional flow structure were used to develop a conceptual model to explain the sustainability of self-formed pool-riffle sequences in gravel-bed rivers. The analysis was conducted at the Red River Wildlife Management Area in Idaho, USA, and enabled characterization of the flow structure through two consecutive pool-riffle sequences, includ...

Hyporheic exchange in gravel bed rivers with pool-riffle morphology: Laboratory experiments and three-dimensional modeling

[1] We report the first laboratory simulations of hyporheic exchange in gravel pool-riffle channels, which are characterized by coarse sediment, steep slopes, and three-dimensional bed forms that strongly influence surface flow. These channels are particularly important habitat for salmonids, many of which are currently at risk worldwide and which incubate their offspring within the hyporheic z...

Modular Experimental Riffle–Pool Stream System

—We describe a modular method for building a large, outdoor experimental stream system that has great flexibility for research projects in fish ecology, behavior, conservation, or management. The system has been in use for more than a decade at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station (Kingston, Oklahoma) and has been used with modification at four other research facilities in the Midwest....

Evaluating techniques for metagenome annotation using simulated sequence data

The advent of next-generation sequencing has allowed huge amounts of DNA sequence data to be produced, advancing the capabilities of microbial ecosystem studies. The current challenge is to identify from which microorganisms and genes the DNA originated. Several tools and databases are available for annotating DNA sequences. The tools, databases and parameters used can have a significant impact...
